Sotogrande was conceived not by a developer but by a Filipino-American industrialist who wanted a polo club. More than sixty years later, the polo remains, and so do the families who founded it.
The pace is slower than Marbella. Children walk to school. Dinner is at nine. The principal residences sit on the high ground above the polo fields, with the Strait of Gibraltar visible from the upper terraces.

- Sotogrande is a 2,000-hectare private resort community in the municipality of San Roque, southern Cádiz province — founded in 1962 by Filipino-American industrialist Joseph McMicking. The community contains the Real Club Valderrama golf course, the Santa María Polo Club, the Sotogrande marina and Sotogrande International School.
- How much does property in Sotogrande cost?
- On the Muse Selection register (snapshot 9 October 2026, from €350,000), 54 residences are listed in Sotogrande, asking from €380,000 to €18,000,000, with a median asking price of €1,328,000. Sotogrande Costa (around the marina) is the denser half; Sotogrande Alto (above the polo fields) holds the principal estates. These are asking prices — Spain publishes no per-property closing prices.
- How is Sotogrande different from Marbella?
- Sotogrande is 44 minutes south of Marbella by car and has a fundamentally different character. The Marbella coast is dense and lively; Sotogrande is quiet, polo-led, and family-anchored — many residents are second and third generation of families who founded the polo club. Pace is slower, dining later, the children walk to school.
- Is Sotogrande good for golf?
- Sotogrande contains four golf courses, the most distinguished of which is the Real Club Valderrama — host of the 1997 Ryder Cup, two Volvo Masters, and multiple Andalucía Masters tournaments. The others are San Roque, Almenara and La Reserva. Golf is the principal social context of Sotogrande life alongside polo.
