Sotogrande was conceived not by a developer but by a Filipino-American industrialist who wanted a polo club. Sixty-three years later, the polo remains, and so do the families who founded it.
The pace is slower than Marbella. Children walk to school. Dinner is at nine. The principal residences sit on the high ground above the polo fields, with the Strait of Gibraltar visible from the upper terraces.

The community contains the Real Club Valderrama golf course, the Santa María Polo Club, the Sotogrande marina (1,400 berths) and Sotogrande International School.

- Sotogrande is 44 minutes south of Marbella by car and has a fundamentally different character. The Marbella coast is dense and lively; Sotogrande is quiet, polo-led, and family-anchored — many residents are second and third generation of families who founded the polo club. Pace is slower, dining later, the children walk to school.

- Sotogrande contains four golf courses, the most distinguished of which is the Real Club Valderrama — Spain’s top-ranked course and host of the 1997 Ryder Cup, two Volvo Masters, and multiple Andalucía Masters tournaments.
